We’ve talked a lot about tomatoes already but lane wanted to share this story with you and ask for your help in identifying this tomato. For a number of years a friend of lanes from elk creek in the Darby community has given her tomato plants that have been around this area for a long time. This is the story her friend Harold told her; thirty or forty years ago an old woman lived way up on the end of Darby in an old house by herself. When she moved away a tomato plant came up by the house where she lived. Lane’s friend pulled up the plant and took it home where he set it out in his garden. He has saved the seed all these years because the tomato is so good. No one seems to know what kind of tomato it is. The plant produces good large firm sweet juicy tomatoes. This is truly an heirloom tomato. If you think you know what kind it is please let lane know. We call the tomato, in this area, the Alice Hodge tomato cause that was the old lady’s name.
