Even though this is mid-august we still have time to plant a few things that can still make themselves before frost such as carrots, onions, lettuce, spinach and even snap beans. In order for these to be able to mature you need to get them in the ground now.
Best days for planting lettuce and spinach are the twenty seventh and eighth. Best time for carrots and onions are the twenty seventh thru the thirty first.
Now is when lane orders all her bulbs for spring blooms. They need to be planted no later than mid-October so that their root systems can form before the ground freezes. Some good bulbs to order, and lane’s personal favorites are, tulips, daffodils, some lilies and of course hyacinths. Bone meal should be added to the soil when planting these bulbs. Bone meal will feed the bulb all winter so it can flower next spring.
