When lane was growing up in the Yadkin valley area the end of summer was a busy time as she remembers. Every bit of farming that was done was done by horse power. She means the four legged variety. Lane’s father plowed, disked, and planted with either horses or mules. When it was time for the potatoes to be harvested daddy would hitch up the team to his turning plow and uncover the potatoes. It was the responsibility of the kids to pick up the good potatoes and separate the bad ones. The bad ones were to be eaten first as they wouldn’t keep in the tater tunnel; same thing for the sweet taters also. Lane and her family looked forward to this time of year because they got something different to eat besides the same old beans and corn bread as usual. Yes fall was and is a glorious time for great food. The pumpkins had to be brought in before the first frost and that always meant pumpkin pie which was a treat because they only got such things at thanksgiving and Christmas. Remembering her childhood as she does it gives lane a great appreciation for having an easier time with the harvest than her parents did. Thank goodness for modern tools and equipment. the photo is the house lane grew up in and still standing, sorta.
