The rain is about over lane tells me she fears. She won’t complain as we need all of the rain we can get. Here on our mountain we were lucky enough to get eight inches of rain. Some people got more and some got less she was told. Ferguson folk had around nine inches. Leatherwood had about the same. Elk creek was really flowing this morning and a wonderful sight it was. Since lane can’t get in the garden to gather any produce because of the weather she has no gardening news to report. So lane thought she would tell you of a few don’ts that her mother and grandmother used to tell the girls when they were growing up.

Don’t try to put up any canning when it’s wet and rainy cause it won’t seal properly. Lane knows this to be true because a friend at the post office canned some salsa yesterday and it didn’t seal. She wanted to know why so lane told her the old story.

When having your monthly don’t go near the garden cause the vines will surely die and please don’t walk in the tomato patch cause they will surely rot, said lanes mother. These two are totally wrong because lane found out herself when she started gardening. She didn’t have time to pay attention to the old tales. She found out that is was nothing more than an old wives tale, which is of course where she heard it.

Funny how we’ve been influenced by the foolishness we’ve been taught.
