Its time to get those greens planted.

August is a good month to do this according to the almanac. The best days to plant mustard, kale and such is the fourteenth and fifteenth. The best time to plant turnips is the eighteenth, nineteenth, twenty second, twenty seventh and twenty eighth. Sow the seeds thickly in beds or rows of finely pulverized soil; Water well in dry weather to speed germination and weekly in dry times to keep them growing after they come up.

Plant seeds about three quarters of an inch apart in hot, dry or windy conditions it’s good to use a row cover until the seeds germinate.

When ready to harvest use a sharp knife or your fingers to cut plants back within a half inch so they will grow back and give you more.

Old people planted turnips and cabbage in September. Some people plant multiplying onions now also. Collard greens need to be planted now also. Old folks say collard greens aren’t much good till the frost bites them which make them better.

When cooking greens wash them real good, put them in a big pot, cover them with water and put in a piece of fat back. Cook this till tender. Drain the water and have some pork grease in a big cast iron skillet. Add the drained greens; slow fry them so they won’t scorch till they’re good and tender. Add vinegar to taste. Have some corn bread baked and ready plus a pot of pinto beans and it’s a meal from heaven.

  1. Two things:
    1) Who is in the B&W picture?
    2) FYI: For us "city folk," anything that starts with "take 20 pounds of tomatoes ..." is daunting! I'm SO impressed.
