Its time to start thinking about what tomato seeds to save. First you decide which fruits you enjoy most. Then pick out the one that looks like the one you want next time you plant.

Saving tomato seeds is really pretty easy and fun as well.

There are many different ways to do this but lane uses the method she learned from her mother and grandmother.

Start by slicing or quartering the tomato. If you don’t want to eat the tomato you can squeeze the seeds out or slice it if you want to use it.

Use a spoon to remove the seeds and put them in a cup of warm water.

Next day the seeds will be in the bottom of the cup and the pulp will have floated to the top.

Place your hand over the cup to allow the pulp and water to escape thru your fingers. This way the seeds are clean.

Put the seeds on a plate or a wire screen and allow to dry for about a month in a warm window but not in direct sun.

After the seeds dry scrape them off of the plate with a butter knife and place them in an envelope and seal. Label this envelope so you know what you put inside. Put in a plastic container and then in the freezer.

In the freezer they last longer but its not essential for saving the seed.

In this photo you see lane working in her garden. in the background is a sheet over the Alice Hodge tomatoes as they were getting sunburn to the point of blistering. The sheet has stopped the problem.
