The tomatoes are slowly coming to an end. Some ways this is good and some it’s a bad thing.

The good is Lane can finally get out of the kitchen for a while.

She has put away quite a few fruits and veggies this year.

The bad thing is after the tomatoes are gone there won’t be anymore really good ones again until next summer. To prolong our harvest when I know its gonna frost she gathers all the unblemished mature green tomatoes, wrap them in newspaper, put them in a box and put them in the root cellar I am currently building. They need to be checked once a week to see if any have started to ripen; If so then its time to set them out on the counter to finish ripening. This way you can have garden tomatoes at thanksgiving and sometimes until Christmas. Or you can pull out the entire plant, hang it upside down in the cellar (cool place) until they ripen. Try it.

The next item to do in the garden is plant greens at the end of august or beginning of September depending upon what the almanac projects.

  1. Wow, those are some huge tomatoes! Nice job on the blog Craig! Now if I could just motivate my lazy butt, sure I could have a decent size garden out here as well. How many types of heirlooms do you have? I read about them awhile back, but you of all people should know how difficult it can be to find good growers, especially out here in the NW part of the country. All I see are normal run of the mill 'maters. They haven't been as good this year as the past 2, not sure why. Ah well...just wanted to drop a line, since Mom sent me a link to your site. Still alive & kickin' over here! Keeping fingers crossed...there is a very good possibility that I will ETS on time next year instead of doing another tour in the sandbox. With the Iraqi government wanting a pullout & Gen Casey nixing the life cycles, things are looking hopeful. Ready to leave the organization. Want time to pursue my dream of cleaner engine mods & there isnt enough time for that in the military. By the time I get home at night I'm wiped out & ready for bed! If I can produce a viable option, will be sure to let you guys know quick, as I know you would both benefit from & appreciate it. If ya'll wanna know more, just shoot me an email sometime. And please give Mom plenty of 'maters when you can...she is as big a fan as me of a good mater sandwich! *Sigh* a good beefsteak or brandywine sounds really good right about now...LOL. OK, "talked" your ears off enough I guess. Take care & hope to visit again soon! -Toni
