It’s beautiful here on the mountain. The leaves are changing fast and the snow is blowing hard. It’s also deer season. The deer are everywhere here but thank goodness they aren’t bothering lane’s volunteer collard patch. Yes you heard right, volunteer collards.

Originally lane bought four plants at her favorite garden center, mid-town market, and last fall.

They grew until bambi decided she was hungry so she ate them off. Then lane sprayed them with her secret weapon, liquid fence.

After that she was able to harvest a couple of messes until the hard freeze. She really didn’t think they would amount to anything after that but they did. Come spring here they were again prettier than before. She picked one big mess and then decided to see what would happen if she let them go to seed.

Let me tell you, lane says, they were the prettiest plants when they were in bloom as beautiful yellow flowers with dark green foliage. They bloomed all summer and went to seed in late summer. So here is evidence of her latest science project. A big crop of scrumptious collard greens ready to pick. She says she thinks she will do this again and you can too as its fun to watch and even more fun to eat. This also works well with mustard, kale and turnips.
