Last spring lane and I opened up two new levels in lane’s garden area.

She did the usual; added horse manure, compost and lime to make sure the ph was good. Everything went well to make the soil perfect and ready to plant so she did; corn, beans, potatoes and such. Everything she planted came up good so she was satisfied with the results. A few days after the first corn came up lane noticed it was wilting and dying. She was confused and couldn’t figure out what was wrong. The weather wasn’t a factor or any other item she could see. She replanted the corn and again it came up good and so again she was satisfied.

A few days later lane walked thru the rows of corn and noticed that the same thing was happening again just as it had the first time. This got lane to scratching her head because she couldn’t figure it out. Then she happened to notice a small hole right next to where a corn plant had been. It was a vole hole. Then she knew what the problem was. Next thing was to find a solution. So she went to her favorite garden center which is mid town garden center where she works part time and purchased three castor bean plants which are commonly called mole plants. Her ex-husband had given her some gopher purge which is another kind of rodent repellent so she planted both all over her garden.

After a week or so these plants got the problem under control. So she saved seeds so she could have more plants next year. No chemicals involved and they are beautiful plants to look at. Not only do they help with the voles but they add beauty to the landscape.
